CiLab at the University of Macerata in Italy: Innovating for Smart Cultural Heritage

13 Nov, 2024 | Events

On November 12-13, 2024, the Cultural Informatics Lab (CiLab) of the University of the Aegean, led by Professor Evangelia Kavakli, co-organized the ERUA Traveling Seminar on Cyber Physical Social Systems (CPSSs) for the Preservation and Promotion of Smart Cultural Heritage. The seminar was held at the Department of Education, Cultural Heritage, and Tourism (Scienze della Formazione, dei Beni Culturali e del Turismo) of the University of Macerata in Italy and culminated in an Ideathon, full of creativity and ideas.

Professor Evangelia Kavakli, along with Assistant Professor Angeliki Kitsiou, led the theoretical part of the seminar, providing participants with valuable insights into the integration of CPSSs in cultural heritage projects. Through their presentations, they highlighted the importance of balancing technology and social needs, paving the way for the creative workshop that followed, facilitated by Prof. Kavakli and Ms. Paraskevi Zangogianni, a PhD candidate and member of CiLab.

The seminar was attended by undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as PhD candidates, from the University of the Aegean, who traveled to Italy for this purpose, and from the University of Macerata. Participants worked in transnational and interdisciplinary teams, collaborated, and developed innovative ideas for using CPSSs in the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage.

Organized as part of the European Reform University Alliance (ERUA), the seminar was more than just an academic event. It was an opportunity for connection, exchange of experiences, and collective creativity. For CiLab, it was a significant step in showcasing its commitment to innovation.

We left Macerata inspired—by the ideas we shared, the connections we created, and the possibilities for future collaborations.
