Conceptualizing digital wellbeing in different contexts
To collect data regarding individuals’ perceptions of digital well-being in the posthumanist era, we are conducting qualitative research. This method proves useful for gathering data that reveals the values, perspectives, experiences, and worldviews of the population under study. The research team employs two different methods for data collection: focus group interviews and a survey chatbot as an online research tool.
Qualitative research: Focus group interviews
Our research team is currently conducting qualitative research through focus group interviews. A focus group consists of a small number of individuals, typically between six and nine, who share certain characteristics and are gathered by the researchers to explore their attitudes, perceptions, feelings, ideas, and views about a specific topic. We anticipate that group interactions will stimulate richer responses and generate new, valuable insights.
Video recording is essential, as the research team analyzes and interprets both the linguistic and paralinguistic/extralinguistic elements of communication. This approach allows us to conduct interviews and collect data efficiently from various age groups (children, adolescents, young adults, middle-aged, and elderly). We will also use a questionnaire (currently in preparation) for broader qualitative research using a survey chatbot.
Qualitative research: Creation and use of a survey chatbot as an online survey tool.
By integrating a chatbot into social networks and the project website, we aim to collect data on a larger scale. Survey chatbots are becoming increasingly popular today. Recent studies indicate that applying humanization techniques to these chatbots can positively influence research participants’ engagement, enhance the interaction experience, and improve data quality. Additionally, the survey chatbot will serve as a case study to inform the development of our proposed Digital Wellbeing by Design framework. We will utilize constructivist grounded theory to analyze the collected data, allowing us to develop and refine the dominant conceptualization of digital wellbeing as found in the literature.
Documentary creation
The results of our qualitative research will be showcased in a documentary film that will include scenes recorded during the focus group interviews. The narrative will be enriched with qualitative data collected through the survey chatbot, as well as insights from experts in various fields.
