Local history, gamification and education. The example of Quai of Mytilene
In this proposed doctoral dissertation, the following will be explored:
- First, the importance of teaching local history in the modern Greek school and the necessity of incorporating it into the curricula of Secondary Education in inclusive classrooms.
- Second, the cognitive readiness of students before and after the gamification of the history of the Quai of Mytilene (QuaiQuest). This involves the production of a digital game as educational material aligned with the philosophy of the new curricula, utilizing game mechanics adapted to the needs and objectives of the educational process, with the theme centered on the history of my city, Mytilene, specifically focusing on the Quai as a palimpsest of successive historical events that took place over the last two centuries.
Research questions:
- What policy has been followed in Historical Education in Greece according to the Curricula of the 21st century regarding the teaching of Local History in Secondary Education (Gymnasium and Lyceum)?
- What factors regarding objectives, content, and learning practices contribute to the characterization of Local History as a "new" and "necessary" teaching subject in the educational reality of Secondary Education?
- How can the design of a gamified classroom contribute to effective teaching practices for learning local history and addressing learning difficulties in inclusive classrooms in Secondary Education?
